As part of an interdisciplinary effort with the English, Math, and Social Studies departments, teachers challenged students to "Reimagine Detroit." Spanish teacher Mrs. Carol Shea took students to Bennett Elementary School in Southwest Detroit. It just happened to be el Cinco de Mayo, so the students enjoyed a parade, concert, art project, and some sweet Mexican fare. 32 Mercy girls interviewed fourth graders in Spanish, and then sub-titled the videos. Afterwards a girl commented, "That was so much fun! and I felt like I was really speaking Spanish for the first time. Instead of just practicing in class, I was communicating with someone who speaks Spanish at home."
Students who could not attend interviewed Mercy students who are native speakers of Spanish. One remarked about the enriching experience, "The Mercy girls that I talked to really made me feel like I could speak Spanish, after only two years of studying it." The video is a charming compilation of the work of many girls, all Spanish 2 students who are still learning the language, "That was so much more real than our usual speaking tests, a great experience."
